Waikiki Beaches and What to Do at Each One

Waikiki is famous for its golden sand, clear waters, and lively atmosphere. With multiple beaches stretching along its coastline, each spot has something different to offer. Whether you're looking for the perfect surf break, a quiet place to unwind, or exciting water activities, there’s a beach in Waikiki that’s just right for you. Here’s a breakdown of the top beaches near Waikiki Beachside Hostel and what you can do at each one.

1. Waikiki Beach – 0.1 miles (2-minute walk)

Waikiki Beach is the heart of Honolulu’s beach scene. It’s the most well-known stretch of sand, packed with sunbathers, surfers, and people just enjoying the view of Diamond Head.
Activities:
  • Surfing (great for beginners with gentle waves)
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Catamaran and outrigger canoe rides
  • Beachfront dining and shopping

This is the place to be if you want to experience the energy of Waikiki. The sunsets here are legendary, and the beachfront hotels and bars make for a perfect evening hangout.

2. Kuhio Beach – 0.3 miles (5-minute walk)

Kuhio Beach, also called "Kuhio Ponds," features calm, protected waters thanks to a seawall. It’s an excellent spot for families, beginner swimmers, and those who just want to float without worrying about big waves.
Activities:
  • Swimming in calm, shallow waters
  • Watching hula performances at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound
  • Snorkeling near the breakwater
  • Visiting the Duke Kahanamoku Statue for a photo op

This beach is perfect for a relaxed day in the water. Plus, the free hula shows at sunset are a great way to experience Hawaiian culture.

3. Queens Beach – 0.5 miles (10-minute walk)

Just past Kuhio Beach, Queens Beach offers a quieter escape with fewer crowds. It’s a great alternative if Waikiki Beach feels too packed.
Activities:
  • Snorkeling along the reef
  • Watching outdoor movies at Sunset on the Beach (seasonal event)
  • Surfing for intermediate riders
  • Strolling through Kapiolani Park

With its scenic setting and relaxed vibe, Queens Beach is a great spot to spend the afternoon before catching a beachfront movie when events are scheduled.

4. Kaimana Beach – 0.9 miles (18-minute walk)

Kaimana Beach is a favorite among locals because of its soft sand and relaxed environment. Located at the edge of Waikiki, near the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial, it’s a great place for a more peaceful beach experience.
Activities:
  • Swimming in crystal-clear water
  • Snorkeling near the rocky areas
  • Paddleboarding in calm conditions
  • Visiting the nearby Waikiki Aquarium

This is a top pick if you’re looking for a less touristy, more laid-back beach to enjoy a swim without the big crowds.

5. Fort DeRussy Beach – 1.1 miles (20-minute walk or 5-minute drive)

Fort DeRussy Beach is one of Waikiki’s widest beaches, giving visitors more space to stretch out. It’s a great place for those who want to escape the packed sands of central Waikiki Beach.
Activities:
  • Picnicking in the adjacent park
  • Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding
  • Lounging under shady palm trees
  • Exploring the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii

With fewer resorts along this stretch, Fort DeRussy Beach feels more open and peaceful, making it ideal for a laid-back beach day.
