What’s Included in the Tour?

Here’s what your Sunday looks like:

  • Start at Waikiki Beachside Hostel: Meet up in the lobby at 8:30 AM sharp.
  • Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail: This paved hike offers jaw-dropping ocean views, a look at the historic lighthouse, and, if you're lucky, glimpses of humpback whales in the distance.
  • Halona Blowhole Lookout: Watch seawater explode from an ancient lava tube and enjoy the coastal views. This is also a great photo spot.

By 1 PM, you’ll be back at the hostel with memories and photos to last a lifetime. Probably a few new friends too.

Makapuʻu Lighthouse: Coastal Views and Island History

Perched on the easternmost tip of Oʻahu, the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse is a historic beacon that’s been guiding ships since 1909. It sits atop rugged sea cliffs overlooking the deep blue Pacific, marking one of the most scenic spots on the island. The lighthouse features one of the largest lenses of its kind in the U.S., and though it’s no longer open to the public, the nearby lookout gives you a perfect view.

The hike to the viewpoint is short, paved, and beginner-friendly, making it a favorite for visitors of all ages. On clear days, you can see neighboring islands like Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi. During the winter months, this trail is one of the best places on Oʻahu to spot humpback whales breaching offshore.

Makapuʻu Point isn’t just a photo-op. It’s part of Hawaii’s maritime legacy and offers an unforgettable look at the island’s natural beauty, blending history with panoramic views.

Why You’ll Love It

  • It’s completely free for hostel guests
  • You get to see more of Oahu in just one morning
  • It’s a social way to explore, perfect for solo travelers or small groups
  • The spots are some of the most photographed on the island
