Hanauma Bay: Snorkel Where Hawaiian Royalty Once Swam

Snorkel in the same waters where Hawaiian royalty once swam. Just a short ride from Waikiki, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine preserve with crystal-clear waters, colorful fish, and almost always a sea turtle or two. This guide gives you everything you need to know—from how to get there, what to pack, what it costs, and how to respect the reef.

The sun is setting over a small island in the middle of the ocean.

Hanauma Bay isn’t just a top snorkeling spot—it’s a piece of Hawaiian history. Once reserved for Hawaiian royalty, this curved bay on Oahu’s southeast coast is now a protected marine sanctuary open to the public (with a small entry fee). It’s calm, stunning, and full of marine life—including a high chance you’ll spot a sea turtle gliding right past you.

Here’s your no-fluff, easy-to-follow guide for a perfect half-day adventure to Hanauma Bay starting from Waikiki Beachside Hostel.

How to Get There from Waikiki Beachside Hostel

Starting Point: Waikiki Beachside Hostel
📍 2556 Lemon Road #B101, Honolulu, HI 96815

The easiest and most affordable way to get to Hanauma Bay from Waikiki is by TheBus, Honolulu’s public transit system.

Route & Cost:

  • Take Bus #22 or #23 from Kuhio Ave (5-minute walk from the hostel).
  • Ride takes about 45–55 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Fare: $3.00 one way (exact change needed), or use a HOLO card for easier transfers.

💡 Pro Tip:
The earlier you go, the better your spot on the beach. But around early afternoon, the morning crowds start to clear—so that’s a sweet time too.

Entry Fee Info & What to Expect

Hanauma Bay has a small entrance fee and a few steps before you hit the water. That’s because it’s a nature preserve first, beach second.

Fees:

  • General Admission: $25 per person (ages 13+)
  • Hawai‘i Residents (with valid ID): Free
  • Kids 12 and under: Free
  • Parking: $3 per vehicle (first come, first served)

If you're not driving, no need to worry about parking fees—TheBus drops you right near the entrance.

Required Nature Video Before You Swim

Before heading down to the bay, everyone must watch a short educational video (about 10 minutes). It covers how to protect the reef and marine life.

Things You CANNOT Do:

  • ❌ No standing on coral
  • ❌ No touching sea turtles or any other marine animals
  • ❌ No feeding the fish

The preserve is serious about conservation—and that’s what keeps Hanauma Bay so beautiful.

Where You’ll Likely See a Sea Turtle

You’re almost guaranteed to see at least one sea turtle here. Look near the left-center of the bay, where the rocky outcrop meets the open water. Turtles often glide in and out through that area.

Best Time of Day to Go

Early afternoon is your golden window. Most tour groups and early risers are heading out, leaving you with more space to enjoy the calm, shallow water and reef.

Shuttle Ride Back Up = Worth It

Once you're done snorkeling, the walk back up to the entrance is a bit steep. A quick shuttle ride ($1) saves your legs and gives you a few more minutes to soak in the view. Totally worth it.

Pro Tip: Snack Up Before You Go

Stop at any ABC Store in Waikiki and grab:

  • 🥪 A sandwich or musubi
  • 🧃 A couple of drinks
  • 🍌 Light snacks or fruit

There’s a snack bar at the bay, but it’s always smart to bring your own fuel for the day.

Your Ocean Adventure, Done Right

Hanauma Bay is more than a beach—it’s a living reef full of life, history, and wonder. With just a little prep, a few dollars, and the right timing, you can experience one of Oahu’s most iconic spots the right way. From royalty to reef, it’s a piece of paradise that’s open to everyone—as long as we all treat it with care.

Don’t forget:
🌿 Respect the reef.
🐢 Give turtles their space.
🚍 Ride smart.
☀️ Soak it all in.
